Various Positions with the ORCA BUS

The ORCA Bus is On the Road with Children’s Activities again this September. This year they will run 5 days a week in the morning, from Saltery Bay to Lund and on Texada Island, too. The ORCA Bus needs Play and Reading Assistants, Bus Drivers and Backstage Helpers.

  • Program leaders and helpers are needed to interact with children and parents on the bus and assist in the everyday operations of the ORCA BUS. 
  • Bus Drivers with airbrake endorsement are needed to transport the bus from place to place. Without bus drivers the ORCA BUS is not possible!
  • ORCA Bus Backstage helpers are desperately needed to clean toys and equipment and do various tasks in order to make the bus a sanitary and safe place for children and parents.

A Vulnerable Sector’s Criminal Record Check is required for all volunteers and will be paid for by Success By Six. ORCA Bus staff provides applicable training. This is a great United Way initiative supported by many groups in the community including the Provincial Government, First Credit Union and The United Way.

Powell River Kiwanis Garden Manor is seeking someone to take initiative and lead a simple crafts group once per month.  All supplies will be provided to create simple crafts that can be completed within the one or two hour craft session per month.

P. R. Community Services Association is seeking dedicated Police Based Victim Service Workers to provide practical assistance and emotional support to victims of crime and trauma.  This position is long term and requires a minimum of two daytime hours per week and after hour availability for crisis intervention call outs.  Interested volunteers are required to achieve and maintain an enhanced security clearance, have a valid and acceptable drivers licence and insured vehicle.  Complete and intensive training is provided including follow up workshops.  If you are a mature, responsible, reliable and empathetic person with a variety of life experience, this may be the right volunteer opportunity for you.

The Community Resource Centre is looking for someone to assist in the Community Demonstration Garden. Duties have an expected time commitment of 2 hours a week and include prep, planting, weeding, pruning, watering and compost management.
The Community Resource Centre is also seeking a Maintenance Assistant for 2-3 hours a month for general maintenance duties such as painting.

Powell River Ravens Wheelchair Basketball Team is seeking a Volunteer Equipment Coordinator & Stats Keeper to maintain both the team equipment and record team statistics.  Orientation is provided but a general knowledge of the game would be an asset.

The PREP Society is seeking volunteers to assist with their Mother Goose Program, which operates two hours per week in eight-week sessions throughout the year.  Volunteers are needed to assist program facilitators in the preparation and cleanup of program space and assist with childcare.  Promote community interaction with rhymes, singing, storytelling and music.

Powell River Community Services Association is seeking a volunteer Receptionist for the Poverty Law Office.  Time commitment for this position is 11am – 2pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Computer experience is required as is a polite & tidy appearance, and good written & verbal skills.  In general, to be available to the Poverty Law Advocate for various office duties.

Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association is looking for volunteers to assist riders, groom and tack horses and/or to help with fundraising for the association. This is a wonderful and rewarding outdoor volunteer opportunity and will be well suited to a volunteer who enjoys walking, children and horses.

Tourism Powell River is looking to train volunteers with a knowledge and passion for our local region as Visitor Centre Counsellors.  Training will be provided as outlined by The Ministry of Tourism, Culture & the Arts, making this an excellent resume builder.  This is a long-term position requiring a minimum of 4 hours per week either during the week or on Saturday.  If you enjoy promoting the beauty and diversity of the Powell River Region, this is the position for you.

The Bruce Dennison Bone Marrow Society requires Volunteer Translators for printed materials.  Information to be translated concerns the need for (and how to become) a bone marrow donor.  Existing pamphlets are in English and will need to be translated to Punjabi, Cantonese & Mandarin.

The Powell River Stroke Recovery Club would greatly appreciate patient volunteers to sit with and assist those recovering from stroke to regain speech and increase communication.

The Powell River Stroke Recovery Club is also looking for someone to volunteer an hour to set up tables and chairs for their weekly meeting and offer assistance to those with limited mobility.

The Powell River SPCA is seeking volunteers to provide bed, breaks and evening meals for cats and dogs.  If you can provide a temporary home for someone's future pet the SPCA will provide all food, litter and medications.
The Powell River SPCA is also looking for volunteers to walk dogs that are in foster care.  Priority is made by area with an emphasis on matching volunteer walkers with dogs in their neighborhood for ease of access.

Skookum Food Provisioners’ Cooperative is seeking donor fruit & nut trees (or grapevines, berry bushes…).  Fruit is divided with one third to each the Tree Owner, the Picker & a local charity.  This project supports and ensures that more food is picked & preserved for the community; more donated fruit for people (not bears) in need; better disposal of spoiled and windfall fruit for farmers to feed pigs, use as compost, etc.; and a healthier tree and human population.  If you have a fruit tree whose life potential could be maximized, please volunteer it.

ST John Ambulance is seeking patient, loving dogs (and their owners) to participate in their Dog Therapy Program.  Dogs and volunteers are expected to provide 2 hours per week of scheduled visitation in hospitals, senoirs residences or nursing homes as arranged by St John Ambulance.

PRACL (Powell River Association for Community Living) is seeking volunteer Program Assistants to support client participation and skill building activities in various programs and in the community for 8-12 hours per month.  The Program Leader will provide orientation to all new volunteers.
PRACL is also seeking volunteers to assist with their day program at Community Living Place. This is primarily a 1:1 support role assisting clients.

Powell River's own Special Olympics is seeking interested volunteers for the following positions:

Program Coordinator to sit on the board, attend monthly meetings, communicate with the provincial office and set up training courses (i.e. first aid) for coaches and volunteers.  This position could mainly be dealt with via emails.

Various Board Members to assist with fundraisers, special events and monthly meetings.

Bowling (Mon 6:30-8pm) - requires Assistant Coaches & Scorekeepers.

Aquatics (Tues 6:30 - 7pm & Fri 5 - 5:30pm) -requires an Assistant Coach.

Curling (Thurs 3:15 - 4:30) - requires an Assistant Coach that has experience with the game.

Floor Hockey/Softball (Fri @ 7pm, floor hockey in winter, softball in spring) - is in need of an Assistant Coach.

All volunteers with Special Olympics have the opportunity to complete the coaching certification program.

The Olive Devaud Residence is seeking the following volunteer positions:
* Craft Helpers for their Arts & Crafts Program,  Someone who can use a sewing machine would be a great asset, but all creativity is welcome.  The program usually runs once or twice a month on Monday or Friday for about an hour.
* Bingo Helpers for their afternoon Bingo games held on alternating Tues, Wed, Thurs or Saturdays.
* Experienced cribbage players to assist residents with the game.  Time and day is flexible for this position.

* Mahjong Assistant, no experience is necessary, you will be taught the rules of the game (Chinese Wall Version).

* Musicians to play at parties for residents.  Requires a one-hour repertoire of music appropriate and enjoyable for an elderly population.

The PREP Society is seeking Volunteer English Tutors to train to work with adults to help upgrade their skills in reading, writing, basic math and more. No need to have a teaching certificate, just a good command of English and the willingness to help.
Training takes place at VIU on  Wednesday evenings, February 8 until March 7. Training is fun and interactive and completely FREE.
